Butter London Spring & Summer 2012 Collection Review and Photos + GIVEAWAY !!!!

Now that Spring is here and Summer is just around the corner, many of the popular polish brands are coming out with new colours to honour the trends of the upcoming seasons. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to try two of the new polishes from Butter London’s Spring & Summer 2012 collection, courtesy of *

The company offered to let me try two colours from this collection. Upon first glance, I noticed that this collection really does include something for everyone. Although there are only five polishes in this collection, which includes colours in both cream and shiny finishes, each colour is unique. There is Bossy Boots (opaque pistachio green), Disco Biscuit (hot pink with iridescent glitter), Knackered (twinkling oyster with micro glitter), Slapper (bold and bright teal), and Trout Pout (opaque cantaloupe). I decided on one cream finish polish, Trout Pout, and one shimmery polish, Knackered.

Trout Pout and Knackered

Before I go into detail about Knackered and Trout Pout, I want to tell you a bit about the formula, packaging, cost, where to buy, and a GIVEAWAY!!!!

Formula: These polishes are 3 Free which means that they do not contain three very harsh chemicals that some other nail polish companies put in their polishes. These chemicals are Formaldehyde, Toluene, and DBP. They can lead to birth defects and other health problems. Even though Butter polishes do not contain these chemicals, the formula is still amazing. They apply very smoothly and do not streak or bubble. I wore each colour for a week and a half and only noticed minimal wear on the tips of the nails on my dominant hand after seven days of wear and lots of dish washing. I did wear my Sally Hansen Insta-Dry top coat with the polishes. However, the top coat was only used to protect the polishes as they dried to a shiny finish. In fact, I had a bit of difficulty taking photos of the colours on my nails due to the shine. I never use top coat when taking pictures of polish because it reflects off my nails and causes a blur. I am wearing no top coat in the photos below but, as you can see, the polishes still have a shine.

Packaging: I absolutely love the Butter polish bottles. They are rectangular and sleek and are the perfect size to fit into my nail polish drawers. I am not so sure about the “Play with Me” stickers on the lids but they peel off easily. On the side of each bottle there is also a sticker that says “Lift to Open”. I followed the directions and, to my surprise, realized that the large rectangular lid lifts off to reveal a smaller, round lid with a bird wearing a crown on top. I assume that the dual lid options are to offer more control during application. I tried both lids and found that I was able to get more control and a more even application with the larger lid.

Brush: The Butter brush is a very standard size in my opinion. I like that it is not oversized like those Pro-Wide brushes from OPI that tend to paint my entire finer in one stroke. The Butter brush gave me lots of control and made it easy for me to coat my entire nail within 2-3 strokes.

Cost: $17 CAD, $14 USD

Out of all the colours in this collection, I feel that Knackered is most unique. In fact, I have not seen a comparable colour from other brands. If I had to describe this colour, I would say that it looks like beautiful mermaid scales glimmering in the sun. Butter uses the word “oyster” to describe this shade. I can definitely see how the multi-coloured pearl finish can look like the inside of an oyster shell. Its shimmery base colour can lean towards blue, purple, or green, depending on the angle at which the light hits it. It is also packed with tons of multi-coloured micro-glitter. Butter definitely created a winning concoction with this colour!

In the photos below I am wearing three coats of Knackered. It is a sheer polishe but looks fairly opaque with three coats. It would look gorgeous over a white or black base. For this reason it is very versatile and has a chameleon-like quality. I think it will be the perfect addition to any nail-polish lover’s collection.

Trout Pout

I instantly chose Trout Pout because I tend to gravitate towards cream finish polishes in peachy-pink-coral colours. This one is no exception and, in my opinion, it is the perfect colour for Spring and Summer and will work with a variety of skin tones. Butter describes this colour as cantaloupe, like the melon, but I find that the melon is much lighter and more orange than Trout Pout which is definitely coral. It reminds me of two of my other favourites, Orly’s Cotton Candy and Essie’s Van D’Go. Trout Pout is darker than the other two. It is more coral and less pink than Van D’Go and, in my opinion, the same colour but about two shades darker than Cotton Candy. It is also very close in colour and shade to Revlon’s Coral Reef lipgloss. I think that the two will be my go-to pair for the warmer months.

In the photos below I am wearing two coats of Trout Pout. After one coat I could have been done my manicure but I added a second coat just for fun. Trout Pout has a glossy finish and is quite opaque. The name makes me think of a beautiful coral-coloured fish swimming through a clear blue ocean (are you noticing an ocean theme? mermaids…oysters…fish…). As you can see, it is a very bright coral pink colour with some peachy undertones. It looks very creamy and smooth and compliments my fair skin. My new favourite coral!

Overall, I am quite impressed with these two colours and will definitely be adding other Butter London polishes to my collection in the future.

*Although the company sent me these two polishes to try out and write a review on, all opinions are honest and are my own*
