December 2013 Topbox

I was very surprised to receive a Topbox this month since I cancelled my subscription in November after receiving only skincare samples for two months in a row. I’m guessing that Topbox bills a month in advance so this should be my final box.
Despite the fact that I no longer want to receive Topboxes, I was fairly impressed with the December box, especially the nail polish and lip butter.
Here are the items that I received this month:
1. Cuccio Colour Nail Lacquer in Remix (full size) – There is a lot of colour going on in this glitter polish (even though it isn’t visible in the photo above), so I’m going to try my best to describe it. The polish includes many hexagonal silver glitters. The rest of the polish is made up of very tiny glitters in shades of green, purple, blue, and silver. Everything is held together with a clear base. Cuccio polishes are free of Toluene, DBP, and Formaldehyde, and they retail for $10. While I love nail polish, I don’t wear glitters often and probably won’t get much use out of this one. For this reason, I will save Remix for a giveaway.
2. Belvada Cosmetics Coconut Lip Butter (full size) – This lip butter is very smooth and has a light coconut scent. Since this product retails for $10, I expected better quality packaging. The little brown pot is made of a very cheap plastic. I probably wouldn’t purchase this product on my own because I don’t like using lip products in pots since they are not very sanitary.
3. Estee Lauder Modern Muse Eau de Parfum (sample is 2.9 ml) – I normally avoid the Estee Lauder brand because it is not very youthful. I thought the packaging of this sample was so cute though so I decided to try the fragrance. Unfortunately it was very strong and mature. I had to wash it off because it made me feel like sneezing even though I only applied a tiny bit of it to my wrist. I like fragrances that are a bit lighter and sweeter so I will not be using this.
4. Skiin Instant Tightener and Line Filler (sample is 3 ml) – Although I fill out the Topbox surveys every month and try to communicate that I really do not like skincare samples, I still continue to receive them. This sample is meant to tighten sagging skin and lift and smooth creases and wrinkles. While it does sound like an interesting product, I have very sensitive skin and tend to avoid anti-aging products which are often quite irritating.
Overall, this Topbox was more impressive than the boxes I have received over the past few months; however, I am still happy with my decision to cancel my subscription.
At the current time, I am not subscribed to any beauty boxes, but I would love to try something new. Any suggestions?

Win a Babyliss Miracurl!!!!

0

Has flat hair got you down? From the cold, dry air to the knit hats and earmuffs, there are many winter elements that can suck the volume out of your hair.

My favourite way to give hair a bit of lift is by adding curls to it. I like using curling wands but I tend to burn my fingers on them and I can never seem to get perfect curls on the right side of my head for some reason. I know I’m not the only one. I always notice when other women have one side of perfect, shiny curls and a nest of mediocre waves on the other.

Luckily, Nail Polish Canada has announced their plans to take a stand and solve this important issue by giving away three Babyliss Miracurls. In just seconds the Miracurl literally sucks your hair right in, curls it, then beeps to let you know that it’s done. Check out this video to see how easy it is to use this automatic hair curler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knCcKILG97w&t=4m33s

To enter the giveaway, simply describe why you or a loved one is in need of a Christmas Miracurl at: http://www.nailpolishcanada.com/products/miracurl-by-babyliss.html (bottom of the page).

The contest is open to residents of the USA and Canada, and the prize will go to whomever can show that they are the most “in need” of this curling tool.

Notes about nominations: Feel free to stretch the truth a bit and most importantly have fun.

In the spirit of a true Christmas Miracurl, the winners will be announced Christmas Day!

Good luck in the contest, and I wish all of you many great hair days in 2014 :)

Review: CND Vinylux Weekly Polish Forbidden Mini Collection

Newly released from CND, the Vinylux system is a weekly nail polish. It claims to last a full week on the nails without a base coat and dry very quickly. It comes with a top coat that must be used over each shade to ensure its staying power, and the polishes are said to strengthen their resistance to chips through exposure to natural light.

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to try out the Vinylux Weekly Polish Forbidden Mini Collection courtesy of my favourite online nail polish retailer, Nail Polish Canada (NPC). Like all of the orders that I have received from NPC over the years, this one came well packaged and included a surprise treat.

The set includes six Vinylux Weekly Polishes and one Vinylux Weekly Top Coat. These mini bottles contain 3.7 ml. I tried out the shades and was surprised to find that each polish has a different formula and finish. Also, the package directions recommend using just two coats of polish which was enough for some shades but not all. That said, it’s true that the polishes dry very quickly. I found that if I accidentally got a bit of polish on my cuticles, by the time I reached for my orange stick, the polish on my skin was dry and I had to get some remover to clean my skin. This is a bit frustrating for those who like to clean smudges while painting; however, I did not have to account for any drying time between coats and I was able to paint my nails rather quickly. Another benefit of these polishes is their scent. They do not smell nearly as harsh as most polishes that I have tried and the faint smell quickly dissipated as soon as the polish dried rather than lingering in the air for hours. Also, from what I have observed, all of the shades in this set (with the help of the top coat) do last for at least a week (usually longer).

Here are my thoughts on each shade:

Burnt Romance: For me, this shade was the most difficult to work with. The first coat looked very smooth upon application but the next coat was rather streaky. I added a third coat to attempt to smooth out the streaks. It helped a bit but I was not completely satisfied with the finished product. This polish had the thickest formula of all the cream finish shades in this set. As for the colour, I would describe it as a reddish-orangey brown with a cream finish. Normally shades like this don’t complement my cool toned skin but I like how the colour of this one looks on my nails.

Tinted Love: This creamy berry shade applied smoothly and dried to a glossy finish. Only two coats of this one were needed since it is very opaque and dries evenly. The formula was thinner than that of Burnt Romance and it glided on the nails effortlessly. My only complaint is that this one left my nails and cuticles with a light berry stain that took a few days to fade once I had removed the polish. I was expecting this though since colours with red or dark pink undertones are often difficult for me to remove and I did not use a base coat with this one so it had more direct contact with my nails.

Dark Dahlia: This polish is my favourite in the set but it did surprise me a bit. First of all, it looks very dark in the bottle and in the photos above, but it was the thinnest, sheerest formula in the whole set and it required three coats to reach opacity. These three coats were very even and smooth and dried very quickly. Like Tinted Love, Dark Dahlia was not streaky, very easy to apply, and it dried to a shiny finish. The colour looks black upon first glance but it is a beautiful deep creamy blackberry that flashes its purple undertones when it catches the light.

Blue Rapture: In my opinion, this medium blue cream is the most unique shade in the collection. I do not own anything like it and it was the first polish to catch my eye when I opened the package. It’s a brighter shade compared to the others but it is very winter appropriate and would look nice during the warmer months as well. The formula of this one is very interesting. It required only two coats to become opaque and even but it dried to a sheen-like finish rather than a gloss. It almost looked like damp wall paint when it was dry and I could see some subtle brush strokes even after it was set. The brush strokes melted away once I applied the top coat.

Night Glimmer: Out of all the polishes in the set, this one had the thickest formula. The polish is so thick that it is almost impossible for a drop of polish to fall from the brush. However, the polish is in no way sticky and it had the fastest drying time. Night Glimmer is also incredibly opaque which is quite surprising considering its glittery finish. It was opaque after just one coat but I applied two. The colour is a bit difficult to describe. The base is a dark grey with pewter shimmers. Sometimes when the light catches it, I see hints of tan coloured glimmers. Whereas most of the polishes dried to a naturally glossy finish, this one was rather flat and reminded me of the suede polishes from OPI. The topcoat helped add a bit of shine.

Steel Gaze: This glitter polish is much thinner and sheerer than Night Glimmer. It applies very smoothly and does need three coats. It can be worn on its own though and does not need to be applied over another polish to show up. This shade has a silvery green base with gold and silver glitters. It dries to a glossier finish than Night Glimmer and the shimmer is much brighter and more eye catching.

The last polish in the set is the Weekly Top Coat. While this product does help extend the life of the polishes and prevent chipping, it does not provide the glossy finish that I’m used to. It gives a bit of shine but doesn’t leave a glassy, reflective finish like Seche Vite or Poshe. It’s also not as thick as those top coats but it is very fast drying. This top coat needs to be applied quickly to avoid streaks.

Overall, I really like the concept of these long wearing polishes and and they are a great option for someone looking for polishes that don’t need to be touched up or reapplied often. The colours are perfect for a range of skin tones and they are very appropriate for the current season. I would love to see if CND comes out with a Vinylux collection for spring and summer.

The CND Vinylux Weekly Polish Forbidden Mini Collection and other CND Vinylux products can be purchased from NPC: http://www.nailpolishcanada.com/categories/cnd-vinylux.html

For a limited time, NPC is offering FREE SHIPING on ALL Canadian orders (no minimum). USA orders over $50 ship free too!

Sigma Beauty Eye Shadow Guide

I really like this eye shadow guide created by Sigma Beauty. I never know which colours will suit me and it’s especially difficult to choose a colour when shopping online. The guide shows day and night recommendations but I’m the type of person who would wear the day recommendations at night too since I like to keep my shadows very light and natural. I think my day recommendations are very accurate based on what I like to wear, and I especially appreciate that the liner recommendation is not black since black liners look very harsh on me.

How do you feel about this guide’s recommendations for your eye colour?

Coffee Circular Pearl Earrings from Clothingloves.net

Months ago, I wrote a blog post about a online store called clothingloves.net that offers affordable and fashionable clothing and accessories, including wedding dresses, women’s blouses, ladies’ fashion, and more (read the post HERE). The company had contacted me and asked me to tell my followers about the site and the type of items that it sells. While browsing the site before writing my post, a few dresses caught my eye and I decided to order one so that I could provide you with a full, honest review of my purchase. Check out the dress review HERE, as well as pictures of a very pretty pair of snowflake earrings that are perfect for the current season.
Since then, I have had the opportunity to try another pair of earrings. The Coffee Circular Pearl earrings below are a very affordable yet classy  pair of earrings that are perfect for work but will also look great with a fancier outfit.
The photos below make the pearls look a bit more warm toned than they are in real life. They are actually more of a mocha colour.
I like that these earrings are very light on the ears and the yellow gold coloured accents are minimal. I normally prefer shades of silver over gold but I find that the gold complements the shade of the pearls in this particular set. The little rhinestones look very elegant and add subtle hints of glamour to the earrings.
Overall, I think these earrings are pretty for the price.

Benefit Haul (Cha Cha Tint and Bikini-Tini Creaseless Cream Shadow)

Lately, Benefit has been one of my favourite makeup brands. I especially love their boxed powders and cheek & lip tints.
While on a recent trip to Shoppers Drug Mart, I decided to redeem my Optimum points to get some new items to add to my Benefit collection.

The first product is Cha Cha Tint which is a mango-tinted lip and cheek stain. I really love the red version (Benetint) and the pink version (Posietint), so I had to try this one. I have used it already and so far I really like it. On me, Cha Cha Tint is a lot more pigmented than the other two tints so I need to apply it with a very light hand. I never really use any of the tints on my cheeks but I love them for my lips. I’m very pale and sometimes I just need to add a bit of flush to my lips to look healthier and more youthful. I like how the tints dry completely and stain the lips with a long lasting colour. I never have to worry about my hair getting stuck to my lips on windy days or smudging my lip shade while eating.

Next is one of Benefit’s new Creaseless Cream Shadows. A few years ago I purchased an old version of this product (the one with the black and white bird patterned lid) and had to return it because it creased on me instantly and was not very pigmented. After my disappointing experience with cream shadows, I was hesitant to purchase a newer version but loved the colour of Bikini-Tini and wanted to give it a chance. I’m amazed how this new shadow doesn’t crease on me at all…even without a primer!!!! This pretty nude pink shade makes my eyes look brighter and more awake. I will be picking up more colours in the future.
Once I try out these items a bit more, I will write another post that includes a more in-depth review, detailed pictures, and swatches of both products.
What are your favourite items from Benefit?

July SeasonsBox

This month’s SeasonsBox post will be a bit different than the others. Normally I’m able to provide informative details about the products based on the information printed on the card sent with the box. For some reason though, my July box was missing its card and the July information was no longer on seasonsbox.com by the time that my box arrived. So, I filmed an unboxing video that includes my first impressions on the products and general thoughts based on the information printed on the packaging.

Overall, I was impressed with this box and look forward to the August box. What did you receive from SeasonsBox this month?

July 2013 Ipsy Bag

Last month, I received my first Ipsy bag (see my post HERE). While the bag included five full size makeup products, none of the items impressed me and I was not able to use any of them. Unfortunately, the exact same thing happened with this month’s July bag. I have been debating whether I should cancel my Ipsy subscription right away or give it another month or two.

Despite the fact that I will not be using any items from July’s Ipsy bag, I will admit that the items were much better and more age appropriate (for me) than last month.

First, let’s talk about the bag…

As a former subscriber of Glymm, I have accumulated many of these mini makeup bags over the past few years. Therefore, I will only keep new ones if I love the pattern. Sadly, much like last month, I really dislike the design of this month’s Ipsy bag.  It’s a sticky pink see-through plastic that feels cheap and very 90s in my opinion. However, I know that a lot of people love this shade of pink so I will send the prizes from one of my giveaways in this bag.

Now onto the makeup items…

1. POP Beauty Pouty Pop Crayon: This product is one of the better items that came in this month’s bag. It is also the only full size item that was sent this month.  I really do like lip crayons and this one is meant to be very hydrating and long lasting. My issue with this product is the shade (I received Rose Romance). While the name sounds pretty, the product has a brown base so I will not be trying it since colours of this nature often turn orange on me. I would have preferred one of the other shades sent in Ipsy bags this month.

2. BH Cosmetics California Collection Eyeshadow Sample: The colours in this palette (purple, bronze, gold) are inspired by San Francisco, California. I decided not to remove the packaging from this product because the colours do not interest me so I thought I would save it to give away. I also do not wear a lot of colourful eyeshadow so I thought it would be a better idea to pass it along to someone who does.

3. Benefit Benetint: Almost everyone has encountered one of these little Benetint samples at some point, either from Sephora, Ulta, a Benefit kit, or one of the other sample subscription services. Since I love Benetint and use it often, I have a full size bottle that I bought two years ago. It’s still over 90% full so I can’t see myself ever needing to open this little sample. I will save it to give away as well.

4. Sexy Hair Soy Renewal Beach Spray: I’ve said many times before that I really do not enjoy receiving skincare or haircare samples. I like my fine hair to look very fresh and clean so a texturizing spray is not something that I will ever use. I know that a lot of people really love that beachy look in the summer though so I’m sure that this sample will be welcomed by a lot of Ipsy subscribers.

5. Coola Mineral Sunscreen SPF 20: I have heard nice things about this brand but I’m pretty happy with the La Roche Posay sunscreens that I use and I know that they won’t irritate my very sensitive skin. I don’t like skincare samples because I’m not interested in straying from the products that I currently use. Hopefully Ipsy will personalize my future bags now that I have filled out reviews for products from the past two months.

Overall, I cannot really see myself using any of these samples. They are just not a good fit for me and it makes me wonder if Ipsy  actually took my beauty profile/survey into consideration when selecting my items. I have not decided if I will subscribe to Ipsy for much longer. I will wait until next month to see how I feel. I think that the price is right at $10 but I don’t like paying $4.95 for shipping. This additional fee makes the bag more expensive than Topbox which sends items that are more appropriate for my preferences.

What are your thoughts on Ipsy?

Giveaway & Review: Incoco Nail Polish Strips

Over the last month I have reviewed Incoco Nail Polish Strips in Very Rosy and Sweet Spots. Today I’m going to review Tickle Pink, a rosy shade with a pretty, satin finish, and also give away a set of strips (you choose the colour or design) to one of my lucky followers! Enter at the bottom of this post.

Read on for the review and giveaway.

While I normally gravitate toward cream finish polishes, I absolutely love the shimmery sheen on these nail strips. They are very iridescent and remind me of mother of pearl seashells. For this reason, I think it’s accurate to describe Tickle Pink as a seashell pink.

Like Sweet Spots and Very Rosy, Tickle Pink came with sixteen double-ended strips that last on the nails for up to 14 days. The strips also came with a little nail file, an orange stick, and application instructions. I found that these specific strips were a little thicker than the patterned ones and were even easier to apply. I wore the strips for a full two weeks before easily removing them with a cotton pad and regular nail polish remover. After two weeks the strips looked almost exactly the same as they did the day that I applied them.

Applying the strips was a very easy task. First, I buffed my nails gently using the nail file in the kit. Next, I prepped my nails by wiping away traces of oil with a polish remover. After selecting a strip to fit my nail, I peeled away the plastic on both sides of the strip and placed the strip as close as I could to my cuticle without allowing it to touch the skin. I then smoothed down the trip with my finger and ran the orange stick from the kit around the edges to smooth out any uneven spots. To remove any excess, I folded the strip over to meet the tip of my finger and gently separated the strip from my nail with the file. Application time for all ten nails took less than ten minutes.

One thing that I really love about the strips is that they are made of real nail polish that is 3-free, so the polish does not contain any harmful dbp, toluene, or formaldehyde. Being made of real nail polish also allows the strips to last much longer than nail stickers made of other materials. Another great aspect of these strips is that they are not tested on animals and are cruelty free.

Over the last year I have tried many different types of nail strips, and I would say that the Incoco strips are most comparable to those from Sally Hansen in terms of application and wear time. I do find that Incoco has more unique design and colour options than Sally Hansen, as well as a lower price tag.

Overall, I’m very impressed with the nail strips from Incoco and I will definitely purchase from this company in the future.  I really like using nail strips because there is no drying time and, in my opinion, they last so much longer than liquid nail polish on my nails. They also don’t make my house smell like nail polish and there is nothing to clean up after application.

The Incoco nail strips can be purchased from http://www.incoco.com. The website also includes a store locator.

GIVEAWAY:
Incoco was generous enough to offer a set of nail strips to one of my lucky followers. The winner will get to choose a set of strips in the design/colour of his/her choice. NOTD: Essie No Baggage Please

Of the four polishes that were released with Essie’s 2013 wedding collection, No Baggage Please was the shade that most appealed to me. I’m always drawn to pastel baby pink shades and this one is rather unique.

First off, the formula is less of a stark creme like other polishes of its kind, and leans more toward a jelly-like formula. The colour itself has neutral to warm undertones that give my skin a healthy, rosy hue.

While it’s a bit difficult to see in the photos, this polish contains very fine particles of silver micro glitter that are most visible in direct sun light. The shimmers mix well into the formula and they do not make the polish feel rough in any way.

As for application, I was a bit surprised by this polish. Aside from Fiji, many of Essie’s light pink shades are quite sheer. However, No Baggage Please covered most of the nail with just one coat. That said, this polish was somewhat streaky and still looked uneven in spots after three coats. In spite of this, the polish looked smooth for the most part and would complement a white wedding dress.

Overall, I believe that I will get a lot of use out of No Baggage Please. It’s perfect for everyday wear and it makes the nails look neat and clean.

July 2013 Topbox (Regular Topbox)

I opted for the regular Topbox again this month. The prive box brands have yet to impress me since the Benefit Cosmetics box.
I was very impressed with last month’s Topbox but I can’t quite say the same about the July box. Four items were sent (one full size), and no makeup items were included (unless nail polish is considered makeup). While there was nothing really wrong with the items, they did not seem very exciting to me. I don’t enjoy receiving hair or skincare samples and they made up more than half the box this time. That said, I think that many people will enjoy the July box since it includes a nice variety of products and a full size nail polish.
For those of you who do not know what Topbox is, it is a service similar to Loose Button, Birchbox, Glossybox, Ipsy, etc., which offers monthly boxes of deluxe size product samples. Topbox currently offers its services across Canada. For more information check out topbox.ca

What did you receive from Topbox this month?

Julep Maven Intro Box (Boho Glam)

I finally subscribed to Julep Maven! As a nail polish lover, I’m not sure why I waited so long to sign up.

After taking the Julep Maven quiz, I was sorted into the Boho Glam group. The Boho Glam intro box includes two polishes and a cuticle oil.

I got my first box for free by using the code FREEMAVEN at checkout. You can sign up for Julep HERE and get started on your quiz to see which category you fall into. If you don’t like what is offered in that category, you can opt for another.

What I really like about this service is that you can skip boxes and send boxes to a friend. Since I already have a decent collection of nail polish, I will likely skip months until I find a box that is very unique.

Here is what I received in my first box:

Julep Nail Polish in Clara (opaque peach crème), Julep Nail Polish in Gabrielle (smoky mulberry crème), Julep Essential Cuticle Oil, and a sample of Julep Rock Star Hand Crème
The Boho Glam box was ideal for me because I prefer polishes with cream finishes and I was in need for a new cuticle oil.

I’m looking forward to see what the selections will be next month.

What did you receive from Julep in July?

Incoco Nail Polish Strips in Very Rosy (Review)

Recently I reviewed the Incoco Nail Polish Strips in Sweet Spots (see the full review HERE). Today I’m reviewing the design Very Rosy which features an orange, red, and pink floral design with green accents and a creamy pinky-white background.

Like Sweet Spots, Very Rosy came with sixteen double-ended strips that last on the nails for up to 14 days. The strips also came with a little nail file, an orange stick, and application instructions. I wore Very Rosy for a full two weeks before easily removing the design with a cotton pad and regular nail polish remover. Aside from some slight wear at the tips of the nails, after two weeks the strips looked almost exactly the same as they did the day that I applied them. Surprisingly, they even lasted through a Saturday afternoon task of pulling down old wallpaper.

One thing that I really love about the strips is that they are made of real nail polish that is 3-free, so the polish does not contain any harmful dbp, toluene, or formaldehyde. Being made of real nail polish also allows the strips to last much longer than nail stickers made of other materials.

Over the last year I have tried many different types of nail strips, and I would say that the Incoco strips are most comparable to those from Sally Hansen in terms of application and wear time. I do find that Incoco has more unique design and colour options than Sally Hansen, as well as a lower price tag.

In terms of application, these strips were easy to apply and they were quite stretchy so I could smooth them over my nails with ease to avoid bubbles or uneven patches. There were a few instances where I didn’t place the strip in the correct spot on the first try; however, it was not a problem since the strips are easy to lift and reposition even though they stick to the nail quite well once they are pressed down firmly and smoothed out.

Since the strips already have a coating of top coat, the design always has a shiny finish and does not need any additional product to keep it shiny or help it last longer. The finish did not become dull with wear and the design did not fade over time.

Incoco Nail Polish Strips in Sweet Spots (Review)

I’m very excited to review these nail strips from Incoco in the design Sweet Spots. Very appropriately named, the pretty pastel dots on these nail strips remind me of one of my favourite things—candy!

Each package of Incoco nail strips includes sixteen double-ended strips that last on the nails for up to 14 days. After wearing Sweet Spots for a full two weeks, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the strips looked almost exactly the same as they did the day that I applied them. They were only starting to wear a bit on the tips of the nails on my dominant hand. I could have worn them for longer than two weeks but, by that time, my nails had grown quite a bit and I wanted to cut them before they started breaking. The strips were easy to remove with a cotton pad and a regular nail polish remover.
As you can see from the photos below, the strips also came with a little nail file, an orange stick, and application instructions.

I’m very thankful to have the opportunity to review a couple more Incoco designs over the next few weeks. See the upcoming designs below.
