Review: Mitty Polish Off Soakies

Mitty Polish Off Soakies Review

Although I love painting my own nails, there’s nothing like the convenience of a salon gel polish manicure that looks perfectly chip-free for weeks after application.

My least favourite aspect of a gel manicure is the removal process. I used to always file off the top layer of gel, soak pieces of cotton in acetone, place them on my nails, and cover with tin foil. Sometimes it would take up to an hour for this process to lift the gel, and the sensitive skin around my nails would be left damaged from the harsh acetone. Not to mention, I remove my polish outside since I can’t stand the acetone smell and want to keep the fumes away from my pets. An hour outside in the summer is a long time for someone like me who is afraid of bees.

I almost gave up on gel manicures because of the unpleasant removal process until I heard about the Mitty Polish Off Soakies from a Cutepolish YouTube video which recommended them for quick gel polish removal. I immediately went to the Mitty site and purchased a set of ten to try.

A set of ten is only $20 CAD with free shipping. They also offer a set of five for $10. This product ships from Australia and only took about ten business days to get to Canada which is very reasonable. The Soakies come in multiple colours such as black, white, purple, yellow, green, and more. I ordered mine in the shade Baby Pink. I love that they are reusable and made from medical-grade silicone which also makes them latex free, allergy free, vegan, and cruelty free.

I did not have high expectations the first time I used the Soakies because I always thought of removing gel polish as a tedious and frustrating task. After buffing off the top layer of my polish with a nail file, I soaked pieces of cotton in acetone and placed them on my nails. Then, I covered each one with a Soakie. It was much easier to push a Soakie over the nail than struggle to wrap tinfoil over it. After a couple minutes of wearing the Soakies, my fingers began to feel warm and comfortable. I was able to easily read a magazine with the Soakies on, unlike with tinfoil. Due to my impatience, I checked them after seven minutes. To my surprise, my polish was completely  lifted and crumbling off. I gently scraped off the excess with a wooden cuticle pusher and my nails were gel polish free within less than ten minutes. Since the acetone had contact with my skin for only a short amount of time, it did not cause any damage.

I definitely feel that the Mitty Polish Off Soakies are a worthwhile purchase and recommend them to anyone who is looking for a quick and easy way of removing gel polish.

Have you tried Polish Off Soakies? What are your thoughts on them?
