NOTD: Essie Spool Me Over (Gel Couture)

Essie Gel Couture Spool Me Over Review

Back in December, I wrote about my Essie Gel Couture Haul from Nail Polish Canada. Since then, I’ve been slowly trying out the three colours that I purchased. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you will know that I have a weakness for pastel pink cream finish polishes. When I placed my polish order I couldn’t find a true light pink colour, so I decided to try Spool Me Over since it was the closest Gel Couture shade to what I was looking for.

Essie describes Spool Me Over as a creamy apricot pink. I don’t see much pink in it. It’s more of a warmer peach shade. While the colour looks beautiful in the bottle, I couldn’t decide if I liked it on my nails. In some lights, it was fine, but most times it looked too warm for me. I think I will try it on my toes in the summer to see if it looks better there.

As for the formula, I expected it to be incredibly thick since it’s a gel polish, but it’s actually very similar in consistency to the average nail polish. I didn’t have trouble working with it and did not encounter any patchiness or streaking. This surprised me since pastel polishes are not always the easiest to apply.

Normally when I paint my nails, I apply one coat of polish and then wait 10 minutes or so for it to dry before applying the next. However, the directions on the Nail Polish Canada site say to let the Gel Couture polishes dry for 60 seconds between coats. I found that this was long enough for each coat of polish to dry enough to prevent smudging. After applying two coats of polish, I applied a layer of the Gel Couture top coat. Within 10 minutes, everything was completely dry.

In terms of longevity, I wore this polish for ten days before I started noticing any chipping at the tips of my nails. I easily removed the polish on day twelve with a regular polish remover. It was nice to not have to use acetone which really dries out my nails.

Overall, I think that the Gel Couture line from Essie is definitely worth trying if you like to wear gel polish but don’t like the high salon costs, the UV light curing, or the acetone removal. These polishes are quick and easy to apply and remove, and they last much longer than a regular nail polish. As for Spool Me Over, it’s a great colour for those who love peachy shades. If your skin is very pale and cool-toned like mine, you may find it a bit warm.

Which Gel Couture shade is your favourite?
